Every time your music is performed publicly, streamed, played on the radio, performed live, or used on TV, a royalty is generated. Performance Rights Organizations (PROs) like BMI and ASCAP collect it and pay 100% of the writer's share directly to the songwriter. That share is yours by right. No publisher can take it, but you only get paid if you are registered with a PRO, and your songs are registered too. Mechanical royalties Every time your music is reproduced, streamed, downloaded, or pressed on vinyl, a mechanical royalty is generated. This one is collected by Mechanical Rights Organizations (MROs), publishing companies, and publishing administrators. It does not come through your distributor, which is exactly why so many independent artists never see it. Here is how the Publishers split: 50% goes to the songwriter, 50% goes to the music publisher. If you self-publish, both halves are yours. If you sign a publishing deal, know exactly what you are trading before you sign. The takeaway You only made a song, but with four royalty streams. Streaming and neighboring rights on the master side, performance and mechanical on the publishing side. If you are only collecting from your distributor, you are running a four-lane business on one lane. Register with a PRO, register with a neighboring rights body, sort your publishing admin, and know your splits before you sign anything. The money is already out there working. Go and claim it. THE PLUG. Powering the culture and the paperwork behind it.
